Le dimanche à Tchernobyl
Sunday at Chernobyl
J'empile torchons vinyles
I pile up dish towels vinyls
Evangiles
Gospels
Mes paupières sont lourdes
My eyelids are heavy
Mon corps s'engourdit
My body is numb
C'est pas le chlore
It's not the chlorine
C'est pas la chlorophylle
It's not the chlorophyll

Tu m'irradieras encore longtemps
You will irradiate me for a long time still
Bien après la fin
Well after the end
Tu m'irradieras encore longtemps
You will irradiate me for a long time still
Au-delà des portes closes
On the other side of the closed doors

Le dimanche à Tchernobyl
Sunday at Chernobyl
J'harangue le soleil
I harangue the sun
J'harangue les sardines
I harangue the sardines
Dans la rougeur des canaux
In the redness of the canals
À la centrale y a carnaval
At the power station there's a carnival
Java javel
Java bleach
Cerveau vaisselle
Brain dishes
Chaque jour se rit de moi
Each day is laughing at me
Indolore
Painless

Tu m'irradieras encore longtemps
You will irradiate me for a long time still
Bien après la fin
Well after the end
Tu m'irradieras encore longtemps
You will irradiate me for a long time still
Le dimanche à Tchernobyl
Sunday at Chernobyl
J'empile torchons vinyles
I pile up dish towels vinyls
Evangiles
Gospels
Sortir en lamés
Coming out in (gold or silver) lamé
En ciré
In wax
Sortir du chapeau
Pulling it out of a hat
Comme à l'accoutumée
As is the custom

Tu m'irradieras encore longtemps
You will irradiate me for a long time still
Tu m'irradieras encore longtemps
You will irradiate me for a long time still
Le dimanche à Tchernobyl
Sunday in Chernobyl

Tu m'irradieras encore longtemps
You will irradiate me for a long time still

Tu m'irradieras encore longtemps
You will irradiate me for a long time still
Au-delà des portes closes
On the other side of the closed doors
Tu m'irradieras encore longtemps
You will irradiate me for a long time still

Bien après la fin
Well after the end

Tu m'irradieras encore longtemps
You will irradiate me for a long time still

what i heard

for meena

the cold wind brings a chill to my arms
though the sun is shining on the trees
and my heart beats like the wings of geese
breaking the skies in a hundred alarms

a wonderous and a dreadful sound
like trumpets of archangels come
to open the seals and release the scum
that tears at my heels like an angry hound

the dark and noxious day has come
the floodgates are opening into the sea
setting the radioelements free
to which the hearts of children succomb

oh greed oh ambition oh carelessness
that drove this race of men and bombs
while back on my porch my sweaty palms
reveal the thing i must confess

i am she who steals the breath
yes i am she who summons death

SDO and STEREO Spot Something New On the Sun 04.09.12

video

The changes of a coronal cell region as solar rotation carries it across the solar disk as seen with NASA's STEREO-B spacecraft. The camera is fixed on the region (panning with it) and shows the plumes changing to cells and back to plumes again -- based on the observatory's perspective -- during the interval June 7-14, 2011. poison

taken once and only once
the disillusionment pill
poisons everything

the clouds are red
as the sun sets
but it's overkill

dogs bark at the wind
there's no stopping them
or their ruined owners

jets spread venom
making x's
dripping in metal

and outpours of xenon
cesium and plutonium
drop from the jetstream

our lungs are overcome
brains muted and dull
exhausted mitochondria

i know i'm bound for hell
but the road itself
is a bitter pill

5022 NE Going

Going going gone
Melaina kicked me out
then turned it back over
when they foreclosed on her
It was both our house after all
We ate beans for three months
to save the down payment

The small green room
for Victoria
The medium blue
for Monte and Paul
We skidded over the long wooden
boards of the master bedroom
and Melaina put up a
ballet bar and mirrors
for my daily pliés

Vic had a piano
Monte had a baseball glove
and Paul was a golden-haired boy
amid Filipinos and Yakimas
a two-year-old sleepy head
falling into his bowl of
dal at the kitchen table

I studied French and made
pate à chou and blanquette of chicken
and on the weekends
Melaina made the best
lumpia and punsit
this side of the Pacific
She worked long days on
big machines she mastered
just as she mastered the
Toyota squareback in
our barn of a garage

Our yard was an acre or more
until they sold the back half
to the Tonganese villagers
who hacked down the
laurel hedges with machetes
We'd look out over the
red-leafed yard, then
down the tree-lined street
of Northeast Going
We watched the harvest moon
rise over the school yard
at the end of the block

We were deliriously happy
then fundamentally stressed
then self-exiled
We never spoke about
the terminal grief of
our own abusive childhoods
We finished three years there
five years all together
five years of trying so damn hard
to be normal
