Joe Dassin was an American French variety singer, son of French cineaste, Jules Dassin, who left America for Europe because he was a communist. The anglophone version of the Partisan Song was by Hy Zaret/Anna Marley, adaptation of a French song from 1943 by "Emmanuel d'Astier de la Vigerie" code named "Bernard." He was a journalist, an important French résistant, and a communist deputee.
