alain bashung - avec le temps

alain, je me reveille à 3h, tu me manques. et puis voilà un nouveau cadeau de toi. je ne peux guère croire que tu as interpreté cette chanson aussi parfaite, mais bien sür que tu l'as fait... tu es visionnaire. tu vas me manquer... à jamais, alain, jusqu'à jamais.

Avec le temps
by Léo Ferré

(translation by petit moineau with thanks to a senior member
of wordreference.com for the word "c'mon" and to

Françoise-Claire Demay for some great tips)

Avec le temps...
With time...
Avec le temps, va, tout s'en va
With time, c'mon, everything goes away
One forgets the face and one forgets the voice
The heart, when it beats no more, it is not worth the pain to go on
Looking further, let it go it's way and that's very good

Avec le temps...
With time...
Avec le temps, va, tout s'en va
With time, c'mon, everything goes away
The other that one adored, that one searched in the rain
The other that one sensed in the turning away of a look
Between the words, between the lines and under the make-up
Of a dressed-up promise that goes out to make its night
Avec le temps tout s'évanouit
With time, everything fades away

Avec le temps...
With time...
Avec le temps, va, tout s'en va
With time, c'mon, everything goes away
Even the greatest memories, you make one of these faces
At the gallery, I rummage through the lingerie of death
Saturday night when tenderness goes out all alone

Avec le temps...
With time...
Avec le temps, va, tout s'en va
With time, c'mon, everything goes away
The other which one took for a cold , for a nothing
The other to whom one gave wind and jewels
For whom one would have sold one's soul for a few pennies
Before whom one was dragged like one drags dogs
Avec le temps, va, tout va bien
With time, c'mon, everything goes well

Avec le temps...
With time...
Avec le temps, va, tout s'en va
With time, c'mon, everything goes away
One forgets passions and one forgets voices
That told you ever softly in poor people's words
Don't come home too late, especially don't get too cold

Avec le temps...
With time...
Avec le temps, va, tout s'en va
With time, c'mon, everything goes away
And one feels whitened like an exhausted horse
And one feels icy like in an accidental bed
And one feels all alone perhaps but snug
And one feels cheated by the forgotten years
Then truly... with time... one loves no more

laura, what a powerful piece of music. i din't realize how powerful until i read your translation. the words and bashungs delivery come the closest to capturing the feeling of dying of any song i can ever remember hearing. also, the weird circus-fellini music in the background made the whole thing more powerful...the contrast between the serious message of the words..and the drunken quality of the music.. it gave it a surreal quality.
laura, i also liked the physical way you laid out the translation..with the original french one line at a time...followed by its one-line translation to english in italics...it was very easy for me to follow as i listened to bashung sing the song...
if this song is any indication...your future translations of bashung will be definitely worth waiting for! thank you for all the work you put into this one..what a great song! r.w.

thank you, my love. it wasn't easy lol! but finding that post by a senior french member of wordreference, talking about the bitterness in the song, helped me a lot, and from there it was all uphill! here's the link to the ferré version, the songwriter's version, on my blog. it too is very powerful, but like you, i loved the felliniesque quality of bashung's. love you so much!!! can't wait to see you in, hmmm? 9 days! xoxoox
